A jury in New Mexico, United States, determined that Meta misled users in that state about its privacy protections, in a case linked to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. This was a political consultancy that improperly collected personal data from millions of Facebook users for political advertising during the 2016 US elections and the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom. Facebook knew that the consulting company bought the data in December 2015, but revealed it only in April 2018 and only because a user filed a lawsuit. The ruling establishes that comments made by the CEO of Meta (parent of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp), Mark Zuckerberg, as well as posts on the company's blog, led people to believe that they had control over the personal information they shared on the platform and that it had general policies on how it addressed hate speech or misinformation. In reality, it sold the data to third-party applications, and applied exceptions to its policies for certain users, depending on the state.
